Video Objective

This video offers an in-depth look at a core infrastructure project within Hong Kong’s Kwu Tung North New Development Area: a shared site office for the Civil Engineering and Development Department and engineering consultant AECOM. The office showcases the innovative application and remarkable benefits of Modular Integrated Construction (MiC).

The video will explain how MiC revolutionizes traditional construction models, enhancing construction efficiency, quality, and safety, while actively embracing sustainable development and environmental principles. Through the lens, we’ll demonstrate how this office cleverly integrates natural light, ventilation, and green spaces, creating a comfortable, efficient, and collaborative modern work environment for 180 staff members. The video aims to inspire the industry to consider future architectural trends and highlight Hong Kong’s leading practices in promoting green and smart buildings.

Challenges in Creating the Video

Producing this video presented multiple challenges. Firstly, the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant difficulties with transportation and material supply. Global supply chain disruptions affected the delivery of MiC components, interfering with our shooting schedule. We needed to communicate closely with the engineering team and flexibly adjust our timeline.

Secondly, clearly and vividly explaining MiC, a cutting-edge technology, was a central challenge. We had to translate complex engineering principles into easily understandable visual language, using methods like animated simulations and close-up shots.

Furthermore, comprehensively presenting the project’s multidimensional value, including environmental benefits, design flexibility, and employee well-being, within a limited timeframe required precise script choices to ensure coherent information delivery.

Finally, coordinating shooting times with construction progress, especially during multiple public holidays, added to the difficulty. This necessitated advance negotiation and efficient operations to avoid disrupting construction.

Solutions

To address these challenges, we adopted a series of innovative and practical solutions.

Regarding the transportation and material supply shortages caused by the pandemic, we communicated closely with the engineering team, tracking component progress in real-time, and flexibly adjusting our shooting plan, sometimes filming in phases when necessary. The video also specifically emphasizes the small size of MiC components, which facilitates short-distance transportation and alleviates logistical pressure.

To clearly explain MiC technology, the video employs various visual storytelling techniques, including detailed footage of factory prefabrication, 3D animated simulations of component assembly, and highlighting the engineers’ rigorous monitoring and testing to enhance audience understanding.

In comprehensively presenting the project’s multidimensional value, the video’s narrative structure was meticulously designed. It not only showcases the construction process but also focuses on the practical benefits of the office once completed. Through close-up shots and real-life footage, it highlights the energy savings of the smart lighting system, the cooling effect of the green roof, the heat insulation of the filter glass, the application of solar panels, and the environmental practices of the shared gardening space. Design flexibility is demonstrated by showing designers assembling initial models.

Finally, to coordinate shooting times with construction progress, the team established an efficient communication mechanism with the engineering group, planning schedules in advance and utilizing MiC’s repetitive processes to accelerate construction, creating more opportunities for filming.

This video not only documents the construction of the Kwu Tung North New Development Area site office but also explores the future direction of architectural development in Hong Kong, with contributions evident on multiple levels.
