AFCD Animation – “Let’s take action against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)”

Client: Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department
Duration: 00:54
Language: English/Cantonese/Putonghua
Video Ownership: The Client
Video Production House: Visual Media Limited

Video Objective

This video aims to raise awareness among pet owners about antibiotic resistance, educating the public on the seriousness of antibiotic resistance and its impact on public health. Through easy-to-understand content, it helps pet owners grasp the correct ways to use antibiotics, effectively slowing down the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria. This not only protects pets’ health but also safeguards human health, achieving a shared goal of epidemic prevention and antibiotic control.

Challenges in Creating the Video

  • Complexity of Concepts and Simplification
Antibiotic resistance involves professional knowledge in microbiology and medicine, and the concepts are abstract and difficult for a general audience to grasp. How to simplify the content without losing accuracy was the foremost challenge.
  • Visualizing an Invisible Process
The way antibiotics act, and how resistance mechanisms operate at the bacterial level, are microscopic and invisible processes. The production team needed to innovate visual methods to concretely represent these unseen concepts.
  • Content Integration and Smooth Narrative
Integrating scientific principles of antibiotic resistance, proper antibiotic usage by pets, and public health impacts—all within a short time—while presenting the information in an engaging and coherent way was a significant challenge. The video needed to balance complete information with an enjoyable viewing experience.

Solutions

  • Use of Dynamic Graphics and Animation Explanation
Animations illustrating the interactions between bacteria and antibiotics allowed viewers to intuitively understand microscopic processes, lowering the barrier to comprehension.
  • Enhanced Visual Contrast and Close-up Shots
The video used close-ups and color contrasts to highlight key messages, increasing persuasiveness and memorability.
  • Thematic Narrative Structure
The content was divided into clear segments: first explaining the background of resistance, then demonstrating correct antibiotic usage, and finally calling for societal participation in prevention. This clear structure made it easy for the audience to follow and absorb.

Contributions

This video not only increased public awareness of antibiotic resistance but also provided concrete guidance for pet owners on how to use antibiotics correctly, reducing the risk of resistance from improper use. It promoted societal attention to antibiotic resistance, advocating for the dual protection of both human and pet health, thus contributing to public health safety. Such popular science videos play a bridging role in the global fight against antibiotic resistance by converting scientific knowledge into actionable insights, encouraging cooperation between the public and professionals.

Additionally, overcoming challenges in visualization and narrative during production showcased high-level creativity and production skills, serving as a reference model for future educational science videos with significant promotional and educational value.
